Stage 4-7

During stages 4-7 of the Learn to Swim programme our swimming instructors are poolside based.

For these stages, instructors no longer need to be in the pool as swimmers need the freedom to move independently and confidently through the water.  The same level of encouragement is still offered so children still feel supported, but swimmers have the opportunity to develop their individual swimming style.

Like previous stages, Learn to Swim 4-7 are divided into progressive stages which form part of the core National learning swimming objectives for primary school aged children.  These have been carefully designed to develop your child’s essential aquatic skills that will stay with them forever allowing the need to be confident, competent and safe in and around the water.

Each of the Learn to Swim stages displays a clear list of learning outcomes that need to be achieved in order to complete the stage.  Take a look below for a more detailed breakdown of each stage and see which would be most suited to your child.

  • Stage 4
Learning different strokes! This stage introduces the learning of all 4 strokes (Butterfly, Backstroke, Breaststroke and Front Crawl) starting with the leg kick. Skulling, log rolls, push and glides alongside flotation skills will also become established in stage 4.
  • Stage 5
Skills and full stroke! Throughout stage 5 children will be taught how to co-ordinate swimming each of the 4 different strokes using both their arms and legs. Treading water, handstands and summersaults along with performing stationary skulling will also be practiced.
  • Stage 6
Full stroke techniques! Breathing techniques and distance swimming is the focus in stage 6. Understanding and preparing for exercise and water safety is also important! Swimming in PJ’s, shout and signal rescue’s as well as surface diving will be planned into lessons.
  • Stage 7
Final stage of Learn to Swim! Stage 7 will see children perfect all 4 strokes and skills learned in the previous stages of AquaStars and Swim England standards.
